Mammoths, mastodons, and let's not forget the elephants
Hunting giant beasts of yesterday and today. |
For the Field Museum traveling exhibition, Mammoths and Mastodons, Angle Park produced three exhibit videos that show scientists in action.
To set the stage for what life was like in North America at the end of the last Ice Age, we travelled to the Big Apple to work with a paleobotanist who reconstructs ancient landscapes based on the evidence in modern-day New York and its surroundings.
To show how scientists can glean a wealth of data from fossilized tusks, we went to the University of Michigan to meet a paleontologist that reads stories preserved ancient ivory like pages in a book.
We followed three scientists as they tracked herds of GPS-collared elephants near the Kruger Game Reserve in South Africa, and listened in as mused on the challenges of conserving these gentle cousins of mammoths and mastodons.
All three programs feature kid "guides," carefully scripted and choreographed on green screen. The guides enter the screen, start and stop the scientist documentaries, point out things the audience may have missed, and help visitors more deeply understand the science behind each concept.

Our travels took us from South Africa...

to the wilds of Central Park in New York...

to a Michigan basement filled with ancient creatures.

We met some brilliant scientists...

and worked with talented kids who helped us explain it all.
